Chinese Couplets in Yongding Hakka Tulou

The Chinese couplet refers to two complementary poetic lines adhering to certain rules, often written on red paper or carved on wooden uprights for appreciation. The contents of Tulou couplets are very abundant, including making patriarchal clan to be honest and sincere, cultivating the morality, working and studying hard, hardworking and thrifty, respecting teachers and valuing education, praising the homeland, etc. It is the spiritual blood of the Hakkas in Yongding. Tulou couplet inherits some basic elements and characteristics of Chinese couplets, and develops and innovates in practice, which irradiates it with unique artistic charm.
