Marine Abrasion Landforms of Pingtan Fairy Well

The Fairy Well, also called “Donghai Wonderland”, is a typical example of marine abrasive landforms in Pingtan.

The Fairy Valley looks like a giant axe has split the mountain in halves, with cliffs straight and vertical. The valley is more than 70 meters long, wide on the outside and narrow on the inside. The rocks falling off the cliffs on both sides have constantly rubbed against one another under the effect of the ocean waves over millions of years, eventually turning to pebbles. The round pebbles, large and small, cover the beach. Watching the tide in the fierce wind at the bottom of the valley allows you to feel the majesty of “swashing waves beating on the shore, rolling up a thousand heaps of snow.”

Then we come to the Fairy Well. It is more than 40 meters deep and the wellhead is about 50 meters wide. There are three holes at the bottom of the well connected to the sea. At high tide, seawater surges from three sides to the bottom of the well, and the surging waves rush up along the wall of the well, like dragons entangling each other in mid-air or celestial beings bellowing at sea.

Around the Fairy Well, there’re several other scenic spots, such as Fairy Peak, and Fairy Cave. In short, this scenic area named after a celestial being and with fantastic rocky shoreline is indeed a fairyland with unique marine abrasion landforms.
